The Kalashnikov assault rifle, also known as the AK-47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova - 47, Kalashnikov automatic rifle, model of 1947) or just AK, and its derivatives, is the most prolific small firearm of the 2nd half of the 20th century. The AK-47 continues to be manufactured in dozens of countries, and it has made it's presence felt in innumerable wars and conflicts since first introduced nearly 60 years ago. The total number of the AK-47 type rifles produced worldwide during the last 60 years is estimated at 90+ m. The AK-47 is truly a legendary weapon, known for it's extreme ruggedness, simplicity of operation, low maintenance and unsurpassed reliability even in the worst of conditions.
